Leh–Manali: a first-timer's planning guide
The Leh–Manali highway is one of the most rewarding rides in the country and one of the least forgiving of poor planning. A few things first-timers consistently get wrong:
Acclimatize before you climb. Spend at least a full day at altitude before your first high pass — altitude sickness doesn't care how fit you are.
Fuel gaps are real. The stretch between Tandi and Leh has no reliable fuel for over 300 km — carry a spare can, not just a full tank.
Permits. Inner Line Permits are required for several stretches and are easiest arranged in Leh itself a day ahead, not at the checkpoint.
Budget more days than you think you need — weather closures on the passes are common and non-negotiable.
