What to do if your motorcycle breaks down far from help in India

If your motorcycle breaks down far from help, get off the carriageway, switch on hazard lights, and make yourself visible. Then call for help: 112 for emergencies, 1033 for a National Highway breakdown. Share your live location, and do not accept a ride you are unsure about.

Make yourself and the bike safe

Move off the carriageway first, because passing traffic is the biggest danger.

  1. Coast to the left edge, off the tarmac if possible, and well clear of bends and crests.
  2. Switch on the hazard lights and turn the engine off.
  3. Put on a reflective vest or jacket if you have one. At night, keep the tail light on.
  4. Stand well off the road, behind a barrier or on the embankment, not beside the bike.

Work out what failed

Check the common causes before calling anyone, because many are quick to fix.

  • Fuel: reserve left, or a blocked fuel tap or cap vent.
  • Puncture: a flat tyre or low pressure. Use your repair kit and inflator.
  • Electrics: a blown fuse, loose battery terminal or kill switch left off.
  • Overheating: stop, let the engine cool for 20 to 30 minutes, then check coolant or oil level.
  • Clutch or chain: a snapped cable or broken chain needs a tow.

Call for help

Use the emergency number for danger to life, and the highway helpline for a breakdown.

  1. Dial 112, the all-India emergency number, for an injury, a crash or a threat to safety.
  2. On a National Highway, call the NHAI helpline 1033 for breakdown and patrol assistance.
  3. Call your insurer or roadside assistance provider if your policy includes it, and note the claim number.
  4. Message a friend or family member your live location and the nearest landmark or kilometre marker.

Find a mechanic or a tow

Ask for help from the nearest town before you pay anyone to take the bike.

  • Search maps for two-wheeler mechanics and service centres nearest to your position, and call before you go.
  • Ask at a nearby dhaba, fuel station or village for a local mechanic. Agree on the price before the work starts.
  • For a tow, get a quote and the vehicle type in writing or by message. Photograph the bike before it is moved.
  • In the mountains, ask a rider group or the nearest police post. Towing may need a truck from the next large town.

Stay safe while you wait

Wait somewhere visible and safe, and keep your phone charged.

  • Do not accept a lift from a stranger if you feel unsure. Wait for your own arranged help.
  • Keep water, a power bank and warm layers with you. Weather changes fast at altitude.
  • At night, stay lit and in a place where passing vehicles can see you from a distance.
  • Tell someone when help arrives and when you are back on the road.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a motorcycle mechanic on a remote route?
Search maps for two-wheeler service centres near your location and call ahead. If you have no signal, ask at the nearest dhaba, fuel station or village, and agree the price first.
