Motorcycle tour packing checklist for India: what to carry on a multi-day ride

For a multi-day motorcycle tour in India, pack documents and money first, then riding gear, a basic tool kit with puncture repair, first aid, rain protection and only the clothes you need. Keep the load low, centred and under your bike's limit.

Documents and money

Carry originals or digital copies of every document the police or a mechanic may ask for.

  • Driving licence, registration certificate (RC), valid insurance and pollution under control (PUC) certificate.
  • A few photocopies or phone photos of the same, kept separately from the originals.
  • Cash in small notes plus a UPI-enabled phone. Network and ATMs can be thin on remote stretches.
  • Emergency contacts written on paper, in case the phone is damaged or flat.

Riding gear

Wear your protective gear for the whole ride, not just on the highway.

  • ISI-marked helmet with a clear visor, plus a tinted or sun shield for glare.
  • Armoured riding jacket, gloves, riding pants or knee protection, and boots covering the ankle.
  • Rain liner or a full rain suit, and waterproof gloves if you will ride in the monsoon or the mountains.
  • Warm base layer and a windproof layer. Mountain mornings are cold even in summer.

Tools and spares

A small kit that fixes a puncture and tightens loose parts solves most roadside problems.

  • Tubeless puncture repair kit, tyre levers, and a 12V tyre inflator or hand pump.
  • Basic spanner and screwdriver set that fits your bike, and cable ties and duct tape.
  • Spare clutch and brake levers or cables if your bike is old or the route is remote.
  • Chain lube, a spare fuse set, and a small bottle of engine oil.
  • Torch or headlamp, and a power bank with the right cables.

First aid and health

Carry a first aid kit you know how to use, and your own medicines.

  • Bandages, antiseptic, gauze, medical tape, and any personal prescription medicines.
  • Oral rehydration salts, a pain reliever, and anti-allergy tablets.
  • Sunscreen and lip balm. Add altitude sickness medicine only after talking to a doctor.
  • A water bottle or hydration pack. Dehydration slows reactions long before you feel thirsty.

Loading the bike

Pack heavy items low and close to the centre of the bike so handling stays predictable.

  • Stay inside the bike's maximum load rating in the owner's manual, including you and your pillion.
  • Use waterproof saddlebags or a dry bag, and strap them so they cannot touch the chain, exhaust or rear wheel.
  • Raise rear tyre pressure to the loaded figure in the manual, and check it daily.
  • Do a short test ride with the full load before the trip day.
