A short but rewarding climb into the Sahyadri hills to Amboli, a monsoon-famous hill station just across the Maharashtra border. The ghat road has tight hairpins with thick forest closing in on both sides, and the whole area is soaked in cloud and waterfalls during the rains. Amboli Waterfall and Sunset Point are the classic stops, while Hiranyakeshi Temple marks the cave source of the Hiranyakeshi River. The area is also known among naturalists for rare amphibians found only in these hills. Roads get slippery and visibility drops in heavy monsoon fog (Jun-Sep) — go for the waterfalls then, or for clear valley views in winter.
