A straightforward highway run north along the Gulf of Khambhat before turning inland into Gujarat's largest city. Ahmedabad's UNESCO-listed old city rewards slow exploration on foot: the Jama Masjid's carved sandstone, the intricate stone jali screens at Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, and Gandhi's riverside Sabarmati Ashram are the essential stops. Adalaj Stepwell, an intricately carved five-storey step-well just outside the city, is worth the short detour. Kankaria Lake's evening promenade is a good way to wind down after riding. Traffic within the city is heavy and chaotic, so plan to park early and walk the old-city lanes. Riders with extra time can also detour to the Calico Museum of Textiles, one of the city's lesser-known but highly regarded heritage stops.
