Malshej–Junnar earns its "best ghat plus rural combination" title by pairing one of the region's most dramatic monsoon passes with a countryside stretch steeped in Maratha history — a genuinely different second half than most riders expect going in. Out of Pune via Narayangaon, the road is straightforward and fast until the ground starts rising into Malshej Ghat, and that's where the ride announces itself.
Malshej is famous, and famous for a reason: in monsoon this pass turns into a procession of roadside waterfalls, thick cloud rolling directly across the road, and a temperature drop that makes the climb feel like a different season from the plains below. It's also one of the most heavily visited monsoon destinations near Pune and Mumbai both, so weekend traffic on the ghat itself can be genuinely slow — riding early or on a weekday changes the experience completely. A short detour to Pimpalgaon Joga Dam, on the Junnar side of the ghat, is worth the time in the right season: the backwaters here are a known flamingo stopover, though the birds' presence is seasonal and not guaranteed on any given visit.
Past the ghat, the route shifts from dramatic to historic. Junnar itself sits at the base of Shivneri Fort — the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj — and the fort is an easy, worthwhile climb rather than a serious trek, with genuine historical weight beyond the usual fort-hopping circuit. A short distance further, the Lenyadri caves add a second, quieter stop: rock-cut Buddhist caves dating back roughly two thousand years, including one still active as a Ganesh temple. Between the two, this back half of the route gives the ride a sense of place that the ghat scenery alone doesn't provide.
Riding conditions vary sharply by season here. Monsoon Malshej is the reason this route exists on most riders' lists, but it's also when the ghat is at its most hazardous — wet rock faces, reduced visibility in cloud, and traffic bunching around the viewpoints. Outside monsoon, the ghat is a quieter, dry, still-scenic climb, and the historical stops around Junnar are arguably more enjoyable without the crowds competing for the same viewpoints.
Fuel and food are reasonably available along this route — Narayangaon and Junnar both have proper towns with reliable stops, unlike some of the more remote routes on this list. This makes Malshej–Junnar a comfortable single-day ride even for riders who want to build in real time at the fort and caves rather than treating them as drive-by photo stops.
A seasonal flamingo stopover on the backwaters — worth the detour, sighting not guaranteed.
