A straightforward ride southwest from Jaipur on solid highway, passing through dry Rajasthan hill country, often combined with Pushkar since the two towns sit just 15km apart. Ajmer's centerpiece is the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, one of the subcontinent's most important Sufi shrines, drawing pilgrims of every faith and especially crowded during the annual Urs festival. The Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra nearby is a striking mosque built from the repurposed pillars of a Sanskrit college, and Ana Sagar Lake's marble-pavilioned promenade offers a calmer counterpoint to the dargah's crowds. Taragarh Fort above town is one of India's oldest hill forts, though its climb and lack of restoration make it a stop for the more adventurous. Expect narrow, congested lanes right around the dargah, and modest dress is genuinely expected inside. This combines naturally with Pushkar as a single overnight loop from Jaipur.
